Chocolate Trifle

Shortly after waking up, Jason brought me my coffee in bed and as I looked out the window, I saw that today was one of those days, that deserves to be taken slow. Overcast and cold, I decided I might as well enjoy my cup of Java whilst reading my book.
At some point I heard my mother “stir”, so I took the opportunity to ask her to make me cooked oats for breakfast. This is something which I quite enjoy eating in winter, but must admit not something which I have learnt to make myself! Besides, there are some things, which you will never admit to, but that your mother probably does make better than you! OK, yes and her traditional Christmas Trifle and fish cakes and Irish Stew. OK, so there are quite a few things, but hopefully by you requesting her to make it, she knows that she is better at it than you!

Anyway, so after lunch, Jason reminded me that I had to make my Chocolate Trifle. He was going to let all other traditions pass, but not this one! Now you see, he is what one would call a chocolate addict. Before we got married, he would have a Top Deck Slab for breakfast! This just appalled me! It has been a struggle to get him off the chocolate for breakfast, but at least he has moved onto Coco-pops instead. Baby steps I guess, although in lock-down its been toast and hot chocolate! Anyway, so I proceed to make my now what has become tradition, chocolate trifle, which I only make twice a year, Jason’s birthday and Easter. If I made it more I do not think it would be appreciated as much, although Jason would argue that point! After the obligatory photos are taken so that we can share my “handy” work with family and friends, there is banter going on between Jason and my mother on how they have to share this trifle with each other and who deserves a bigger bowl. I just smile, proud of my “creation”.
At some point during the morning I tease my mother about how much like my Gran she has become. Now like most kids growing up, I adored my Gran, but as I teased her, it dawned on me, that for some reason my mother does not like to hear it, as it is probably the things which annoyed her about her mother! It then also struck me that 20 years from now what “traits” of my mother is going to manifest in me which I do not want to hear at all! Oh how the wheel does turn!
This afternoon my mother was on her daily call to my aunt. Gosh, I hope that deafness is not one of the things I get, especially since I could not only hear my mother’s side of the conversation, but also my aunts’, this behind closed doors on the other side of the house! I was of course accused of eavesdropping when I corrected her on some facts she was getting wrong in her conversation, oh well, as long as the memory does not go completely either!
I joke about this now with Jason, but what do you miss about your grandparents that you found absolutely adorable, but what your parents seem to find annoying and now in your “old” age you are not too sure how you feel about any of this getting “old” business?
Until next time…….
Love, light and positive change,
Ophelia
