Connecting with Technology

Last night we “met up” with some friends over a few glasses of wine. We all had our drinks of choice, from a now very bare looking bar. It was only the second time we visited this way. The last time we challenged each other to a couple of games of Cards Against Humanity, but this time we decided to forget about the game and just enjoy each others’ company. I am a music lover, so I could not help but stream the Global Citizen One World Together At Home at the same time.

Today Jason commented on how he is grateful that we were not in lock-down 10 years ago! There was internet back then, yes, however it was very basic. I could not imagine us video calling and live streaming a video concert at the same time. The quality was PERFECT! No drop in video or sound quality. Do you remember the buffering days? We would have given up 5 minutes within the call! Internet with fibre has now become an essential service, which we would not trade for anything!

Jason just reminded me that less than 6 months ago, I was not convinced that we needed such a powerful internet connection, so he hopes that I am eating my words. Yes, yes, for ONCE he was right, lol.

So there we were, having “virtual” drinks with 4 other households. We contemplated on how we are coping and what we are “missing”, agreeing that our first drink together will be at a wine farm, away from the crowds!

What an absolute crazy world we are living in! Did we ever think that this was going to have to become a “norm” if we wanted to connect with people? Yes, we have been doing “office meetings” and “long distance learning” like this for a few years now, but to be “socializing” like this, gives social distancing a new meaning!

As much as what we hate technology, never “switching off” from the world completely, like we did before, it has also been a “God-sent”, allowing us to remain connected during a time when we crave being connected.

I am sure that there are many lessons which we will learn from this lock-down. Today, although grateful for technology, may we never again take for granted the physical time spent with our loved ones. I hope that it teaches us to “slow down” and learn the meaning of connecting and being present.

Until next time

Love, light and positive change
