Just a chip

Over the weekend, as I attempted to change my glasses from reading, to sun, I dropped the reading glasses on the garage concrete floor! After retrieving it, a few choice words were uttered, when I noticed a slight chip in the right lens.

Having owned various reading glasses over the past 36 years, I can proudly say that this was the first time that I had actually damaged a pair! Murphy’s law, that this chip also had to be in the most expensive pair, less than 9 months old! I am sure that you can “feel my pain”? The only thought that was going through my mind was that at least the chip wasn’t in the left lens. After a childhood injury, I only have peripheral vision in the right eye, so with the chip being in the center, it makes no difference to my eyesight.

Being over a long weekend, I had no choice but to wait to message my Optometrist to see if he could fit me in for an appointment for Tuesday, which luckily he could. So off I go to see Marco. After intense scrutiny and showing me on Google as to how many layers there are to my imported lens, he suggested that since it is not the left lens, we just leave it as is. If he attempts to start fixing it, it will start penetrating the different layers, plus then the transition will be affected, which means that there will be a difference between the 2 lenses, which will then result in the other lens also having to be replaced. Since it is my “bad eye”, lets just leave well enough alone and forget about “the look”. Who cares about a slight chip anyway? Marco, you have a point!

When my Ophthalmologist suggested that I use the Optometrist at his office I was not 100% convinced. My parents always used the “on-site” Optometrist, but when I had to start purchasing my own, being the frugal person that I am, I went for the “mass” option that always had a buy 1 pair reading glasses and get your sunglasses for free! Anyway, since I was tight for time and the Optometrist could see me I decided to give it a go. Lots of talking, studying of different options and measuring and fitting to no end, out I walked with a new pair of glasses on order. When the bill eventually came, lets just say, Jason was not a happy camper. As he put it, he could get at least 8 pairs of Gliders for what my 1 pair was costing! Now normally I would agree, but as I pointed out to him, mine was the “Lamborghini” of reading glasses with all the imaginable bells and whistles. Plus it had a warranty on it and if ever I had a problem I could go and see Marco at no cost at all.

As I left Marco, many thoughts went through my mind. Yes, I initially paid a lot, but the “after” service care which I was getting was worth it. I had to agree with him, do not mess with a good thing. If it is not completely broken, do not attempt to fix it, as you might just make matters worse.

How often in life do we attempt to fix something which is not really broken, forgetting how many unseen layers we might be impacting? Unless we are able to spend the time, effort and money on it, lets just leave well enough alone. Sometimes a chip off the old block adds character and sets us apart from the rest!

Until next time.

Light, love and positive thoughts
