Karma

At the start of lock-down a friend was practically in tears when her beloved fur-baby had to be hospitalized after a bone got stuck in his stomach. She never gives her dogs bones, but with her being unable to take them out for a walk, she thought she would give them a treat, but unfortunately it ended up in a visit to the Vet for poor Zoro. Zoro recovered, but it ended up being a very expensive treat, which the dogs will no longer be getting!

She was still reeling from that trauma when her washing machine decided to take its last breath. With 4 children now at home full time, you can just imagine her distress! Hubby was forced to get a new one, whether they could afford it or not! There was no way that this modern stay at home mom was going to be doing laundry by hand!

When she shared her story with me I felt for her, but thanked my lucky stars that all my appliances were still working and that no one in my household needed any emergency procedures done.

A few weeks later I read on Facebook about a friends’ “trauma” when she wanted to buy a vacuum cleaner, since hers decided it had enough, but was told that it was not an essential item and that she should use a broom instead! I giggled at this and thanked my lucky stars that I did not have carpet and that a broom and mop is all I need to clean my floors! She of course did not think that it was a laughing matter at all!

Karma, yes karma decided that the joke was on me and that they would have the last laugh!

Yesterday after lunch, I packed the dishwasher, turned it on and then forgot about it. 3 hours later Jason asked me whether I noticed the error message, “F5”. Power off, an obligatory kick, power back on, re-programme to a shorter cycle and we could hear her “take her last breath”. After another kick and Jason sticking his head inside, we decided it was time to perhaps call in the professionals.

What did we do before Facebook and your neighborhood groups? I asked for a recommendation for someone to fix a dishwasher, within minutes someone responded and it was arranged that he would come this morning. He arrived way before the arranged time and promptly proceeded to confirm that unfortunately our trusty dishwasher could not be resuscitated. It was going to be cheaper for us to buy a new one than to try and have the motor replaced.

Bless my Jason. He immediately announced that we had no choice but to get a new one. He is practical like that and when we arrived at the wholesaler with a line roping around the entire parking lot and him telling me to get in line whilst he parks, I knew that I had a keeper! He was determined that we were not going to be washing dishes by hand, especially not with both of us now being at home 24/7. Sanity still prevailed with me and when I overheard an old man saying that he was not that crazy to stand in that line, I had to agree with him!

Luckily for us, less than a minute away we had an alternative store that we could go to and within 15 minutes we had purchased our brand new dishwasher, which is hopefully going to last as long as its predecessor!

It seems that my sanity only prevailed at the store! Today was the day I decided to try my hand at making Koesisters! Have you ever attempted making those? You make your dough, leave it to rise for an hour, knead it, leave it for 40 minutes, shape your little balls and then deep fry them in oil. 70 deep-fried balls later, I am waiting for them to cool down so that I can coat them in sugar syrup and then roll them in coconut.

Not sure what I was thinking, especially with the morning that I had had! Has this become my new coping mechanism? Stressed? Bake. Hungry? Bake. Sad? Bake. Bored? Bake. Happy? Bake. Husband wants a treat? Bake. Adventurous? Bake.

At the start of lock-down I pondered on whether or not I would perfect this “art” of baking. I can proudly say, that I am well on my way!

Until next time

Love, light and positive change
