Nail Maintenance

Updated: Jul 9, 2020

It is only day 2 of lock-down and already I have a nail “problem”. Somehow I am missing nail varnish off 1 toe. Now how on earth did that happen? A normal person would say not a problem, but for me its an absolute crises! I know, I know, who is going to see my toes, but that is not the point!

You see, I am terrible at painting my own nails. Another “art” I have not managed to master. I have the smallest of toe nails on the smallest of toes, so not only does my nail get painted, but also the entire tip of my toe! I am not joking. Why do you think I rarely wear nail varnish? One could argue that I could go out and get it painted, but when it is not important, it does not become a priority. For me it is a treat when I am in need of a little pampering.

Now in lock-down, one starts noticing things that you would not necessarily notice in the past. Multi-coloured, with 1 differently coloured nail seems to be in the “in” thing, so I guess I will attempt this. Mind over matter and all that! Plus who is going to notice anyway?

So I mention my dilemma to my husband and he says, “#First world problems”. And you know what, it is exactly that! Where do I start with that, especially in our current situation?

Things to be grateful for:

  • I was born with 10 toes

  • I can walk, no problem

  • I have socks and shoes to put these toes into

  • I have running water and soap to wash my toes

  • I can afford to have little pamper sessions, in both time and money

  • Under normal circumstances I can drive where I need to be

The list goes on and on of what most of us should be grateful for and especially the things we take for granted.

Earlier in the week, before the lock-down I had my gardener and domestic here. I reassured them that I would pay them for the month and continue to pay them their salaries each month until we are out of this situation and they can return to work. As I was driving to work that morning, for the last time, I thought of the last minute things I needed to stock up on. The realization then hit me, that I still had that luxury, but what about the more vulnerable, like the 2 afore-mentioned people? I just could not send them home only with their salaries. So when I started filling my trolley instead of getting goodies for my household I bought a few essential basic food items for my 2 employees. When it was time for them to leave, I gave them each their food parcels and the gratitude on both their faces I will never forget. I think at that point they both realized the severity of the countries situation especially when I also gave them some Vitamins, medication to boost their immune system and a long “lecture” about staying safe.

I am not telling you this story to make myself look good, as I know that there are many of you out there that did the same, but I am sharing this because it brings me back to the things we take for granted and our #firstworldproblems. Who cares, when there is so much more to worry about?

May we never again take our freedom of movement, our health, our luxury of time and our “first world problems” for granted. May we never forget and learn from this situation which affects not only our 3rd world country, but yes, many more 1st world countries. May what divides us as humans, bring us together as one world. History is being written and may it never again repeat itself.

Until next time…….

Love, light and positive change,

Ophelia
