Memes

Since our first lock-down announcement there have been hundreds of different “memes/jokes” that randomly appear within minutes of these eminent announcements. If not on Facebook, you are guaranteed to be receiving more than your fair share on the various “group chats” which you might belong to on WhatsApp!

Jason and I are always astonished at the speed and frequency and always wonder if all of these creative minds do not secretly wish to be getting a job on the Nandos' campaigns, since lets face it, they are the trendsetters when it comes to memes and taking the mickey out out serious situations!

Do you ever wonder who actually creates them and if it is their full time job? Do they have like a vault filled with different scenarios, for just in case? There is also never a name to it! Are they busy “hiding”, and for good reason or do they just love the anonymity of it all? Lets face it, with how crazy the world is, you sometimes have to have a sense of humor to get through it all. Then again for some of it, you have to be a bit demented, pretty creative and a completely out of the box thinker!

I would love to know what is going through these peoples minds. A lot of these memes we are all secretly thinking and would never say aloud, although share we do, but how many of us would actually have the “guts” to create memes of our own, put it “out there” and put our “name to it”?

The one memes “creator” that does come to mind are those “Vannie Kaap” guys! They say it like it is and people actually love it and the brand keeps on growing!

There has to be some money to be made out of this and if so, why is no one else jumping on the bandwagon or is it because a lot of these memes are for the moment and a moment later yesterdays news, whereas the Vannie Kaap guys memes are timeless and so “specific”, although EVERYONE can still resonate with what they are saying?

When I Googled the meaning of the actual word, the below is what came up:

meme

noun

plural noun: memes

  1. 1. an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.

  2. 2. an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by Internet users, often with slight variations.

With all the seriousness around us, do you enjoy receiving these “memes” or do you shy away from it all? Some would say that you have to be pretty “sick” to be enjoying them, whilst others would argue, that we all need to have a good laugh and if we cannot laugh through it we might just end up crying instead.

Which side of the fence are you on and why?

Until next time

Love, light and positive change

Ophelia
